Everett Bradley (featured in Swing! at
the St. James Theatre) chooses Frankie & Johnnie's, 269 W. 45th St., bet. B'way and 8th Avenue
At Frankie
& Johnnie's Restaurant, popular owner Peter Chimos tells guests about the time
longstanding waiter Mario was held up and told to fork over the restaurant's secret sauce
recipe! (Apocryphal, perhaps, but the tale underscores the spot's legendary rep.)
This mythic
eatery - an erstwhile speakeasy - exudes character. Short on decor (posters of shows like
Kiss Me, Kate and Tango Argentino dot the no-nonsense walls), it is long on tasty sirloin
and filet mignon platters (which may also be sampled at a new location in Rye, N.Y.)
Tom Selleck,
Liza Minnelli, Tom Wopat and Peter Gallagher are members of the Frankie & Johnnie's
fan club; as are theatregoers who've discovered that prices are about 20% less than those
of the competition and who head there for nifty lamb chops, broiled filet of salmon,
lobster tails and other treats. And bartender Bobbie still mixes martinis to make strong
men swoon. Frankie
& Johnnie's is now open for lunch Tues.-Sat. noon-2:30 pm. Dinner Mon.-Sat.
4:30-11:30 pm. (Cl. Sun.) A la carte entrees $13.95 - $29.95. Wine list. Cas. dress. CC.
Complimentary parking. Res. sug. 212-997-9494.
