Stage Work

Scene: An exercise studio. A spandex-clad class learns how to pose like a duck just
as the cast of Fosse does. Stage Left: Amused Cardio Tai Boxers look on. No.
Rehearsals haven't moved into health clubs. Fosse is just one of many stage productions
being transformed into a workout. It all started last year when Crunch fitness director
and dancer Donna Cyrus asked Chicago cast members to teach. That proved to be such good PR
for the show--and a treat to spin-weary students--that the program expanded to include
Fosse, Swing!, and now Contact. Meanwhile, New York Health and Racquet Club has premiered
a Broadway masters-class series which will include the cast of Kiss Me Kate this spring.
"It kills me physically," says Swing!'s Robert Royston, who teaches before doing
two shows the same day, "But teaching allows me to let people feel what I feel when I
perform." So what's in it for the gymgoing public? "Since the moves are new to
your muscles, they're as much a workout as aerobics," says Cyrus, "Plus it's
fun." But only if you don't mind an audience--J.C.
