*** Officially Proclaimed "Swing Week" by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ***
For the first time in New York
history, an unprecedented number of swing events will be presented as part of
"Swing Week" August 14th through 20th throughout New York City and its outer
boroughs. From symposia and lectures, to demonstrations and dance contests, "Swing
Week" will try in seven days to cover the incredible cultural phenomenon known as
swing. Events are targeted to amateurs and professionals as well as seniors and kids ---
with many of the events having FREE admission. Organized by the producers of the Broadway
musical Swing!, the week is a salute to the history, music and dance of this original
American art form. The week will be topped off on August 23rd, when swing dance
finalists from over six participating clubs, will be brought onstage at Swing!'s St. James
Theatre and New York's finest amateur swing couple will be chosen! The week's honorary
hepcat, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has officially proclaimed the festival as "Swing
Week."
"Swing Week"
commences with a symposium, sponsored by ATOMIC Magazine (Monday, August 14th), that
encompasses the golden era of swing through the neo-swing movement of today. Different
styles of swing will be addressed, and a panel of experts will discuss their approach to
the genre. Speakers include World Champion dancers Ryan Francois, and Jenny Thomas, swing
aficionado Casey MacGill, and other respected members of the swing community.
Some of the many varied events around the city include demonstrations and swing dance
lessons on the rolling lawns of the Bronx Botanical Gardens with DanceSport (Saturday,
August 19th) and Central Park (Sunday, August 20th). Macy*s presents performances by the Pierre Dulaine Dance Club (Tuesday,
August 15th) and the
Broadway musical Swing! (Friday, August 18th). Other major events include an afternoon of teaching with an
evening of dancing at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio (Thursday, August 17th). Stepping Out
Dance Studio appeals to everyone from kids to west coast swingers and country western
dancers with their lessons and three level swing party (Monday, August 14th and Friday,
August 18th). You Should Be Dancing
! invites teens and seniors to classes targeted
to their generations (Tuesday, August 15th and Thursday, August 17th). The Sandra Cameron
Dance Center salutes 75 years of New York Swing, 1925-2000, with an afternoon of rare
videos, demonstrations, mini-classes, and dancing. In cooperation with the New York City
Park's Department, the Rock N' Rollerblade event (Saturday, August 19th) at OrchardBeach
will be dedicated to "Swing." In addition, cast members of the Tony nominated musical Swing!
will perform live at a free performance (12:40PM) at Bryant Park on Thursday, August 17th.
Swing contests will be held at New York City nightspots Swing 46, Cotton Club, Chicago
Blues, El Flamingo, and True. Willie McBride's in Hoboken, NJ will hold their own swing
contest, Wednesday, August 16th. The semi-finals to dance on Broadway's St. James stage
