Nominees for Astaire Awards Announced

The Astaire Awards, named for stage and screen hoofer Fred Astaire,  annually celebrate the best dancing on Broadway. With a wide array to choose from, this year marks the first time in the 19 year history of the awards that they have been expanded to include nominees. Previously, only one awardee had been named in each category. The awards will be presented on May 18 at the Hudson Theatre on West 44th Street.

Contact tops the list with four nominations, followed by Kiss Me, Kate with three; The Music Man with two and Swing! with one nomination.  The complete list of Astaire Award nominees follows.

Lynne Taylor Corbett (Swing!)
Kathleen Marshall (Kiss Me, Kate)
Susan Stroman (Contact and The Music Man)

Best Female Dancer
Stephanie Michels (Contact)
Deborah Yates (Contact)
Karen Ziemba (Contact)

Best Male Dancer
Clyde Alves (The Music Man)
Michael Berresse (Kiss Me, Kate)
Stanley Wayne Mathis (Kiss Me, Kate)

Though the nominees for were selected from this past season's thirteen Broadway shows that include dance, they overlooked performers in dance-heavy shows such as Riverdance on Broadway, Saturday Night Fever and Swing!.
